Fear is a normal reaction to a genuine danger. A Phobia is either irrational or excessive; it is an abnormal fearful response to a perceived threat or situation. People can develop phobic reactions to animals (spiders), activities (flying), and social situations (eating in public or simply being in public places).
Phobias affect people of all ages from all walks of life, phobias trigger an emotional and physical reaction, and symptoms of a phobia include the following:
Feelings of panic, dread, horror or terror
Reactions that are automatic and uncontrollable, practically taking over the persons thoughts
Rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, nausea
Extreme measures taken to avoid the feared object or situation
A phobia can be dealt with very easily using change techniques, sometimes in only three or four sessions.
